Find a file in Google Drive and hand the result back

duetcases.com is an unofficial community site. It is not affiliated with Anthropic. This page is not a hands-on test. Duet may be a trademark of Anthropic.

What this does

Anthropic’s help center says Claude Duet can use apps you already connected in Claude, and it names Google Drive in that list. A separate Workspace article lists Drive actions for Claude and Claude Desktop. Duet is designed to ask before it deletes anything. This page is not a hands-on test and does not describe emptying a Drive.

Problem

The file is usually already in Drive. The useful handoff is finding it, reading the text, and bringing a draft back for you to check.

Anthropic’s help center says Claude Duet can use the apps you have already connected in Claude. The examples include Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Slack, QuickBooks, HubSpot, Docusign, and Calendly. You start every connection yourself, and you can disconnect any app later. Disconnecting stops new access from that moment. Memory of earlier conversations is kept.

A second article, Use Google Workspace connectors, describes Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Drive on Claude and Claude Desktop. That article is not a Claude Duet screen guide. Duet reuses a Drive connection you made in Claude. The Workspace article is where the Drive actions are listed.

What the Workspace article lists for Drive

On Claude and Claude Desktop, that article says Claude can:

  • Search and retrieve Google Docs from Drive.
  • Look up file metadata and preview a file without searching first.
  • Read Sheets, Slides, PDFs, images, and Microsoft Office files.
  • Upload any file type, with an option to convert it to a Google format.
  • Create folders.
  • View file permissions and list recent changes.
  • Share, move, and trash files. By default Claude asks before each of those. On Team and Enterprise plans, owners decide whether members can allow them without asking each time. Claude Duet is not on Team or Enterprise during this preview, so that owner setting is not carried over to Duet here.
  • Save Claude-generated files to Drive when code execution and file creation are enabled. That line is about the Drive connector on Claude. The Duet help center does not describe a separate “save to Drive” button.

When Claude reads a Drive file, the article says it extracts text only. Images embedded in the document are not processed.

Attachment content is a Gmail limit, not a Drive limit. The same article says Gmail can use attachment metadata, and that the attachment content is not directly accessible.

What this does not turn into a Duet screen

The Workspace article also describes live editing of Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides in a pane beside the chat, on Claude on the web in Chrome and on Claude Desktop when the built-in browser is on. Those are separate Docs, Sheets, and Slides connectors. Adding a Drive file with the plus button, or pasting a URL into a Claude chat or a private project, is described there too. None of that is written up as a Claude Duet layout.

Finished work from a larger Duet job shows up in the Make tab. The help center names a research brief, a financial model, a slide deck, and a dashboard. A deck you review before anyone else sees it is Build a slide deck with Claude Duet. That case does not claim Duet co-edits a Google Slides file in a side pane.

Before a delete, the Oct 23 safety article says Claude Duet shows you the action, the destination, and the content, then waits. The help center’s list is send, pay, sign, or delete. A single approved trash is not a wipe of the Drive.

When this helps, and when it does not

Use it when Drive is connected, you want a file found and summarized, and you will read the draft. Skip it when Drive is not connected, when the part you need is an embedded image, or when you wanted the Desktop side-by-side editor. Mail attachments stay on the Gmail connector: metadata only, on the Workspace article.

The morning list of what needs you is the morning brief. Thinning the inbox is inbox triage. The named-app directory is connectors.

Claude Duet is a research preview. It can misread a file. This page did not run the task.

Steps

  1. 1Connect Google Drive yourself in Claude settings. Claude Duet reuses that connection. You can disconnect it later. Disconnecting stops new access; memory of earlier conversations is kept.
  2. 2Say which file, folder, or topic to find, and what to hand back. Paste the prompt and replace the bracketed topic.
  3. 3Read the summary. If the job returns a larger file, such as a brief, model, deck, or dashboard, the help center says finished work appears in the Make tab.
  4. 4If the next step would share, move, or trash a file, read that approval before you confirm it. A trash step is one action, not a way to empty Drive.
Look in my connected Google Drive for [topic or file name]. Read the text of the files you find and hand me a short summary with the file names. Do not share, move, or trash anything until I approve that specific action. If an image embedded in a file is part of what I asked for, say you could not read it. If Drive is not connected, stop and tell me.

When to use

  • Google Drive is already connected in Claude, or you are willing to connect it yourself.
  • You want a file found and read, and you will review the draft before anything is shared or deleted.
  • You do not need the live side-by-side editor. That pane is described for Claude on the web and Claude Desktop, not as a Claude Duet screen.
